International Day of Yoga

June 21st, 2016

The United Nations has declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga. It is Sadhguru’s vision to make this day into a major offering of yoga and a possibility for people of all age groups, religions, nationalities and social backgrounds to experience meditativeness, expanding their perception of life from individuality to universality.

Spiritual leader and Isha Foundation founder Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev will lead a yoga session at the UN on the occasion of the second International Yoga Day next month.

The International Yoga Day will be commemorated on June 21 and this year’s focus will be on the theme of Yoga for the Sustainable Development Goals.

India’s Permanent Mission to the UN said Sadhguru will lead the yoga session at the international yoga day in the premises of the world body’s headquarters.

The first International Yoga Day was commemorated at the UN with aplomb last year, with External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj leading the celebrations along with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and US Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard.

Ban and his wife had joined hundreds of students and yoga practitioners to perform asanas and mediate during the event.

Apart from the Yoga day commemoration by the Indian mission in the UN, several events have been planned across the city by various organizations.

“The only way to experience true well being is to turn inward.

This is what yoga means–
not up, not out, but in.
The only way out is in.”

– Sadhguru

Yoga does not mean twisting the body, holding the breath or something else. The word “yoga” literally means union. In one’s experience, everything has become one. Yoga is a system of raising human ability to perceive, to enhance individual human beings to realise their ultimate nature. Yoga is the most profound exploration of the very mechanics of life.

International Day of Yoga is coming at a crucial time. The yogic science is of utmost significance now, like never before. Earlier, in pursuit of wellbeing, people have looked up. This has brought a lot of hallucination, and created continuous wars between one kind of heaven and another. They are fighting over a God or a heaven that both of them have not seen, but they are willing to fight to death. In recent times, there has been a shift towards seeking wellbeing from the outside world. In the process of trying to take the juice of life from outside, we are destroying the very source of our living – the planet itself.

The message of yoga is this: “Not up, not out – in. The only way out is in.” If we look up, we are in conflict. If we look out, we are in conflict. But if we look inward for our wellbeing, there is never any conflict – not in the world, not within us.

The venue: Chandigarh’s Capitol Complex will host 30,000

The ministry of AYUSH has decided Chandigarh’s Capitol Complex as the venue for the 2nd International Yoga Day function that would be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 21. Sources said the UT was going to hold a high-level meeting on Thursday to chalk out the strategy in this regard. The UT has planned to bring and accommodate around 30,000 people to make the event a success. The officers were already holding a series of meetings with various yoga institutes, schools, health department and other wings for their active contribution in the event.

The budget for the Chandigarh event has been estimated to be Rs 2.89 crore.  Out of total 12 lakh square feet area at Capitol Complex, around 9 lakh square feet area was earmarked for the function.

Around 75 lakh people are expected to take part in International Yoga day on June 21.  30,000 yoga participants have registered for the venue, while around 70,000 residents shall have a parallel yoga session at different 200 venues.

Buoyed by the encouragement given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his address in the NCC rally on January 28, the NCC cadets set a Limca record with 9,50,210 of them performing yoga simultaneously at 1,767 venues across India on June 21. Under the leadership of group commander, Varanasi Group A, Brigadier AK Goel, 28 UP Girls’ Battalion (Group-A), Banaras Hindu University (BHU) began its fortnight training with ‘yogabhyas’ (practice of yoga), witnessing participation of girls of several schools and colleges from May 1.

The government is aiming for “100% participation” in the event by all institutes including the IITs, NITs and IISERs.  A Yoga Olympiad coordinated by the NCERT is also being mulled,

It’ll be bigger and better than the than the maiden show on Rajpath last year, Ayush Minister Shripad Yesso Naik said: “We have decided to celebrate it in a big way. We cannot accommodate more people on Rajpath. We have chosen Chandigarh and all other states will celebrate in their own regions.”

The first IYD was celebrated in 191 countries and the ministry is expecting participation of more countries this year. International Yoga Festival has been organised to portray different activities being planned and to be conducted by different yoga organisations, ministries, government departments and other organisations.

The Centre has released an “improvised” common protocol of yoga postures for this year’s international Yoga Day (IDY) which will be held on June 21. The protocol is an improvised version of last year’s protocol and gives a brief overview of yoga and yogic practices to orient one towards comprehensive health. “The booklet gives a brief overview about Yoga and Yogic practices to orient one towards comprehensive health for an individual and the community. The present edition of Common Yoga Protocol is an improvised version of last year’s Yoga Protocol,” an official statement said. Postures like yogic sukshma vyayama, yogasanas, and pranayama have been added in the 2nd revised edition, for a one hour set of exercises.

Though no mobile phones would be allowed, the Chandigarh administration has decided to have a camera zone having the selfie area. “As soon as you enter the area for yoga, we shall have our cameras which will allow a selfie. This will be only at the time of entry and not when the session is on,” said Ajit Balaji Joshi, deputy commissioner

3. HOROSCOPE FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE 2016
ARIES
Sun will be transiting into your 2nd house and 3rd house indicating favorable position in the second half of this month. While Malefic Saturn and Mars are losing strength, benefic Jupiter is gaining strength, can do wonders on your life. This month will bring you great success on your career and finance. You will be very happy with your progress. Many subha karya events will make you gain enough fame in your social circle. This is going to be a best month for you in this year 2016.
Special Note: You will be move up until end of next month. But you will be under severe testing period from Aug 2016 onwards. Hence make sure to settle down in your life very well in the next 8 to 10 weeks.
TARAUS
Sun will be transiting into your 1st house and 2nd house indicating unfavorable position for entire this month. Venus is in very good position for entire this month. Rahu, Ketu, Mars and Saturn can continue to create setback. Since Jupiter is very powerful and it is good position, you would be able to move on your career and finance. Both Jupiter and Venus will make sure to pass this month with good progress. This is going to be one of the good month for you, even though your growth is limited.
GEMINI
Sun will be transiting into your 12th house and 1st house indicating unfavorable position for entire this month. The position of Saturn and Mars are looking good in the long term but they would not be able to protect you in this month. You cannot expect any positive results from fast moving Mercury as well. Rahu is well placed on your 3rd house. You would have suffered a lot in the last month because of Jupiter. Now this is going to another testing period with much higher intensity. You may have to go through unexpected bad surprises. The good news for you is, once you cross 6 weeks (Mid July 2016), you will start moving up on many aspects for entire rest of the year.
CANCER
Sun will be transiting into your 11th and 12th house indicating favorable position in the first half of this month. Sun and Mercury are in very good position for you. Venus can yield excellent positive results until June 12th. Saturn and Mars are not in great position but placed in weak position, is a good news for you. Benefic Jupiter is in full force to deliver excellent positive results for you with respect to your health, career and finance. The relationship problems will also come down. It is going to be another good month for you in a row
LEO
Sun will be transiting into your 10th house and 11th house indicating favorable position for entire this month. Mercury, Sun and Venus are in excellent position for you entire this month. Mars is also getting into favorable spot for a short period of time that is between Jun 18, 2016 and July 10, 2016. Even though all major planets Saturn, Jupiter, Rahu and Ketu are not placed well, all fast moving planets are in excellent position. Even though you under a very long and severe testing period, the time period between July 18, 2016 and July 10, 2016 will give you very good relief.
VIRGO
Sun will be transiting into your 9th house and 10th house indicating favorable position in the second half of this month. Mercury and Venus are in good position for most of the time in this month. Mars moving backwards into your 2nd house for a short period of time from June 18, 2016 can create major setbacks. Slow moving Saturn on backward can continue to provide positive results on your long term goals. I could see this month will give you mixed bag of results. You will experience positive results on your health, career and family environment. But your finance and investments may not go well, especially short term trading. Overall I could call it as another progressive month for you. Control your expenses and stay away from trading, you would be fine!
LIBRA
Sun will be transiting into your 8th house and 9th house indicating unfavorable position for entire this month. Venus is in good position entire this month. Since Jupiter and Rahu are in conjunction on your Labha Sthanam, you will do very well on your career and finance. Favorable Venus and Jupiter on transit, can fix your family problems. You may expect to have more fortunes and success in this month as well. Since Mars is moving on your Janma Sthanam on June 18, 2016, take extra care on your health. Other than that, it is going to be a great month for you.
SCORPIO
Sun will be transiting into your 7th house and 8th house indicating unfavorable position for entire this month. Venus will do good things for you from middle of this month. You cannot expect any benefits from Mercury. Mars is getting into better position from June 18. You cannot expect any positive results from both Jupiter and Saturn. Both the negative and positive energies are very low for you in this month and hence you would not find any major change both on the upside or the downside now. You can be happy that you would be able to manage the current position. If you have got good natal chart support, you can start seeing very good growth since energy levels from transit planets are very low
SAGITTARIUS
Sun will be transiting into your 6th and 7th house indicating favorable position in the first half of this month. Ketu on your 3rd house, Jupiter on your 9th house, Mars moving back to your 11th house, are positive key planetry positions that can give you more fortunes. Since many planets are looking great in the sky, you will see great success and growth on many aspects of your life including health, family and relationship, career, finance and investments. This is going to be another best month for you in a row in year 2016
CAPRICORN
Sun will be transiting into your 5th and 6th house indicating favorable position in the second of this month. You cannot expect any good results from Rahu and Ketu. Unfortunately, fast moving Mercury and Venus are also not in good position. Saturn is the only planet that can protect you from disaster. Jupiter on your 8th house will deliver its bad results aggressively, shows that you will have to go through many unexpected events. Your time is looking excellent but only in the long term. You will have to manage the severe testing period at least until July 12, 2016. Then you will give good support from the planets for the entire rest of the year.
Hopefully you can avoid taking important decisions for another 6 weeks that is until July 12, 2016. Then you would not be non-stoppable on your growth.
AQUARIUS
Sun will be transiting into your 4th house and 5th house indicating unfavorable position for entire this month. Malefic Saturn and Mars losing energies is a good news for you. Fast moving planets Mercury and Venus are very good position for entire this month. Subha Graha Jupiter is placed well on your kalthra sthanam in very powerful position, can do many wonders on your life. You are going to have excellent growth and happiness for this month as well with much higher intensity. This is going to be one of the best month for you in this year 2016.
PISCES
Sun will be transiting into your 3rd house and 4th house indicating favorable position in the first half of this month. Rahu and Venus are in very good spot for entire this month. While you cannot expect any fortunes from Saturn, Mars moving back to your 8th house is looking miserable. To make things much worse, Jupiter would be delivering its malefic results very fast from your runa roga sathru sthanam. You will hit the bottom in another 6 weeks that is by Mid July 2016. Next Jupiter transit is looking due in Aug 2016 is looking excellent for you. Hence you need to have enough patience and tolerance to cross the current testing period that will end by Mid July 2016

Ujjain: Kumbh is now over. Millions of devotees throng Kshipra for ‘shahi snans’ & other days

The ‘snan’ began in the wee hours with Naga and other sadhus of various akharas venturing into the holy Kshipra chanting “Har Har Mahadev”. The snan will end tonight.

A sea of humanity, some drawn from abroad, braving the sultry weather on Saturday flooded the banks of Kshipra river for the ongoing third and last ‘shahi snan’ (royal bath) of the Simhastha-Kumbh Mela, marking the end of the month-long festival.

The ‘snan’ began in the wee hours with Naga and other sadhus of various akharas venturing into the holy Kshipra chanting “Har Har Mahadev”. The snan will end tonight.

The third royal bath has become all the more important as it coincides with Buddh Purnima (full moon day), said priest Ishwar Sharma. “Lakhs of people have converged from several parts of the country to take the holy dip,” Madhya Pradesh Transport Minister and in charge of Simhastha Mela Bhupendra Singh told PTI at Ramghat

The Minister claimed that a total of 7.5 crore people have taken part in the mela (till noon) which turned out to be a “Mahakumbh.” All roads in Ujjain are packed with devotees jostling to reach the banks of Kshipra or the holy dip.

The Minister termed the Simhastha, which is being organised here after a gap of every 12 years, as a “grand success.” Referring to the squall that hit the mela on May 5 and claimed seven lives including two accidents and causing injuries to nearly 100 others, Singh said though 700 tents were damaged, the casualties were not much if you look at the damages that the storm had caused.

Ram ghat has been decked up for the holy dip where the Naga sadhus of Juna, Agni, Aahvan and Vaishnav akharas along with their Heads took dip carrying their flags, deities and traditional symbols since 3 AM. After the akhara ‘snan’ got over, scores rushed towards various ghats especially Ram Ghat to take the holy dip.

The Minister also informed that there was no pollution in the river and maintained that good hygiene condition prevailed at ghats and also in Ujjain city. He said during the month-long mela, nearly 10,000 foreigners visited Ujjain. A devotee from Ireland, Brendan Lawlor, said, “I have enjoyed my stay in Ujjain and the arrangements in the holy city were very good.”

A French lady, Sonia Koszul, also praised arrangements at the Simhastha mela. “I got interested in attending this religious fair after coming to know about it through the internet,” she said.

A differently-abled devotee from Chhattisgarh, Maniram Sahu, said he was here since last nine days and hasn’t faced any difficulty. Aides of Baba Krishnanand, a wheelchair-bound centenarian spiritual leader, who arrived here from Haridwar also praised the arrangements at the massive congregation of Hindus.

However, pilgrims coming different parts of the country faced difficulty in reaching the main ghats for snan and had to walk at least 4-5 kms in scorching heat to take the holy dip. A devotee, Rakesh, said, “I got stuck for four hours in the traffic last night and finally came back to the hotel without taking bath. We took the dip today.”

On the occasion, a multitude of people visited the popular Mahakaleshwar temple here which houses one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. The devotees had to wait for two hours in serpentine queues to offer prayers to Lord Shiva.

Panchmukhi Hanuman – Know significance and reasons to pray Him!

Panchmukhi Hanuman – Know significance and reasons to pray Him!

Lord Hanuman is known to be an earnest devotee of Lord Rama. He not only represents valour, but is also an epitome of devout. If there is anything we can learn from Him, it’s the firmness of mind and confidence in bodily strength to face all the obstacles in life with courage.
Panchamukhi Hanuman is the form of Hanuman which represents five faces of the lord. There’s an interesting story behind this. According to the legend, Lord Hanuman adopted the 5-faced avatar in order to rescue Lord Rama from Ahiravana – the lord of hell.

They signify:In order to rescue Lord Rama, Hanuman must extinguish the five lamps at a time in order to kill Ahiravana. So this made Lord Hanuman have five faces: Hanuman, Hayagriva, Narasimha, Garuda and Varaha

Hanuman: Purity and success.

Narasimha: Courage.

Garuda: Dispenses poison.

Varaha: Wealth.

Hayagriya: Knowledge

Viewpoint: Why Hindu groups are against California textbook change

Textbook
Some academics want India to be replaced with “South Asia” in school textbooks

Thousands of academics and Indians have signed a petition to stop the California State Board of Education from changing “India” to “South Asia” in its social studies textbooks. Associate Professor at Santa Clara University Rohit Chopra explains what the controversy is about.

What it means to be Hindu and Indian have long been the subject of argument in India.

These disagreements have been amplified since the crowning of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014, often taking ugly forms on social media or the street.

In California, a similar conflict is playing out about the representation of Hinduism and India in state textbooks for 11 to 13-year-olds, recalling a fight on the same matter a decade ago.

The debate centres significantly on the renaming of India as South Asia and the role of caste in Indian society.

Confusing terms

The rationale for calling the region South Asia, advocated by a group of distinguished academics, is that it is a more accurate descriptive term for the region, one that does not equate India as it existed before 1947 with the modern Indian nation-state.

Terms like “ancient India” and India, they argue, could be confusing in certain contexts for the students, in addition to obscuring the common historical past of modern India and Pakistan respectively.

Media coverage has typically pitted this group of academics as well as secular South Asian organisations against a group of conservative Hindu-American organisations, like the Hindu American Foundation (HAF).

A protest in India after Ganesha images appear on flip-flops in India Hindus in India protested after Ganesha images appeared on flip-flops in the US

The Hindu-American organisations accuse the academics of wanting to “erase” India itself by recommending the change of name. These groups also seek to remove references to caste prejudice in the textbooks.

The academics, on the other hand, argue that South Asia is a more logically appropriate term than India for the textbooks. They also hold that deleting references to caste contradicts the educational goal that students should develop a rich and nuanced understanding of the region.

Yet this starkly demarcated opposition, while making for good copy, masks some important issues about immigrant identity in the US, understandable parental anxieties, and the politics of the study of Hinduism in the US.

As someone who has researched the global Hindu right, yet is opposed to its politics, as an Indian in the US, and as a parent, I find that the debate, as it has been framed in the media, neglects underlying issues of crucial importance.

A key issue has to do with why groups such as the HAF possess legitimacy among many Hindu students and Hindu communities, not all of whom may share their politically and culturally conservative view of Hinduism?

The answer is simple: the same sorts of groups, regardless of their politics, are also often the first ones to protest racist depictions of Indians or Hindus, such as when American Eagle Outfitters printed the image of Lord Ganesha on flip-flops.

It is not the rock star academics working on South Asia, India, or Hinduism who spearhead such protests, though in their research they do challenge Orientalist and racist stereotypes.

Caste question

So cultural organisations like the HAF are often the only venue for Indians to get their children to learn about the Indian epics, for instance, through summer camps. That does not make everyone who attends such events a Hindu nationalist or even a Hindu conservative. The same arguably holds for many of those opposing the change of India to South Asia.

In a letter to the New York Times, Nathan Glazer, Professor Emeritus of sociology at Harvard, points to the clunkiness and lack of historical validity of the term South Asia.

Dalits have for long faced discrimination from caste Hindus in India

I have no strong feeling about the matter, even though the term is bereft of much meaning for me. But it is worth asking of the academics the kinds of questions that academics love asking about everything.

When and where was this term first used? For what reasons? To what extent might it reflect the politics of the American academy, something at which Prof Glazer hints?

The question of caste is more complicated. Removing all references to caste from the textbooks would constitute a consummate act of symbolic violence, echoing the brutal history of violence enacted upon Dalits by caste Hindus over centuries.

Ironically, it would conform to that most American of habits: historical amnesia about America’s own forgetting of its violence against its Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, Sikh, or African-American populations.

Stereotypical views

At the same time, it is a fair point that caste does not exhaust Hinduism, and that for an alarmingly large number of Americans, Hinduism is still little more than caste and cows. Perhaps one might add call centres to that list.

As a parent, I share the worries of many Indian-Americans that my son should not be labelled on the basis of a limited, stereotypical, view of India centred on caste.

Indians in America
More than 2.23 million Hindus live in America

The analogy would be Indians viewing White Americans solely as perpetrators of slavery.

If we are to view the controversy through the metaphor of battle, the honours seem to be divided. India will remain in the textbooks, representing a victory for Hindu-American groups.

However, in keeping with the view of the academics and a broad-based coalition of progressive groups, South Asian Histories for All, references to caste will not be removed from the books.

But this is unlikely to be the last we have seen of this battle.

I am not optimistic that the academics and Hindu-American organisations will find any common ground.

But a richer portrayal of Hinduism in the textbooks, warts and all, may be a possible shared objective on which there can be agreement, before the endless wars over Hinduism in the US resume.

5. KNOW YOUR FESTIVALS – JUNE 2016
5.1. 2016 Nirjala Ekadashi

Nirjala Ekadashi is the most important and significant Ekadashis out of all twenty four Ekadashis in a year. Nirjala means without water and Nirjala Ekadashi fasting is observed without water and any type of food. Nirjala Ekadashi Vratam is the toughest among all Ekadashi fasting due to strict fasting rules. Devotees abstain not only from food but also from water while observing Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat.

Benefits – Devotees who are unable to observe all twenty fours Ekadashi fasting in a year should observe single Nirjala Ekadashi fasting as fasting on Nirjala Ekadashi brings all benefits of twenty four Ekadashi fasting in a year.

Nirjala Ekadashi is also known as Pandava Ekadashi and Bhimseni or Bhima Ekadashi due to one legend associated with Nirjala Ekadashi. Bhimsen, the second Pandava brother and voracious eater, was not able to control his desire of having food and was not able observe Ekadashi fasting. Except Bhima, all Pandava brothers and Draupadi used to observe all Ekadashi fasting. Bhima, being upset due to his weak determination and doing a dishonor to Lord Vishnu, met Maharishi Vyasa to find some solution. Sage Vyasa advised Bhima to observe single Nirjala Ekadasi fasting to compensate for not observing all Ekadashi fasting in a year. Due to this legend Nirjala Ekadashi is also known as Bhimseni Ekadashi or Pandava Ekadashi.

Time – Nirjala Ekadashi fasting falls during Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month and currently falls in month of May or June. Nirjala Ekadashi falls just after Ganga Dusshra but in some years Ganga Dussehra and Nirjala Ekadashi might fall on the same day.

Parana means breaking the fast. Ekadashi Parana is done after sunrise on next day of Ekadashi fast. It is necessary to do Parana within Dwadashi Tithi unless Dwadashi is over before sunrise. Not doing Parana within Dwadashi is similar to an offence.

Parana should not be done during Hari Vasara. One should wait for Hari Vasara to get over before breaking the fast. Hari Vasara is first one fourth duration of Dwadashi Tithi. The most preferred time to break the fast is Pratahkal. One should avoid breaking the fast during Madhyahna. If due to some reasons one is not able to break the fast during Pratahkal then one should do it after Madhyahna.

At times Ekadashi fasting is suggested on two consecutive days. It is advised that Smartha with family should observe fasting on first day only. The alternate Ekadashi fasting, which is the second one, is suggested for Sanyasis, widows and for those who want Moksha. When alternate Ekadashi fasting is suggested for Smartha it coincides with Vaishnava Ekadashi fasting day.

Ekadashi fasting on both days is suggested for staunch devotees who seek for love and affection of Lord Vishnu.

This is amazingly hilarious….

Revenge of an Ex-wife ..

She spent the first day packing her belongings into boxes, crates and suitcases.

On the second day, she had the movers come and collect her things.

On the third day, she sat down for the last time at their beautiful dining room table by candlelight, put on some soft background music and feasted on a pound of shrimp, a jar of caviar and a bottle of Chardonnay.

When she had finished, she went into each and every room and deposited a few half-eaten shrimp dipped in caviar, into the hollow of the curtain rods.

She then cleaned up the kitchen and left.

When the husband returned with his new girlfriend, all was bliss for the first few days.

Then slowly, the house began to smell. They tried everything….  cleaning, mopping and airing the place out.

Vents were checked for dead rodents and carpets were steamed.

Air Fresheners were hung everywhere.

Exterminators were brought in to set off gas canisters, during which they had to move out for a few days, and in the end even paid to replace the expensive wool carpeting.

Nothing worked.

People stopped coming over to visit.

Repairmen refused to work in the house.

The maid quit.

Finally, they could not take the stench any longer and decided to move.

A month later, even though they had cut their price in half, they could not find a buyer for their stinky house.

Word got out and eventually even the local realtors refused to return their calls.

Finally, they had to borrow a huge sum of money from the bank to purchase a new place.

The ex-wife called the man and asked how things were going.

He told her the saga of the rotting house. She listened politely and said that she missed her old home terribly, and would be willing to reduce her divorce settlement in exchange for getting the house back.

Knowing his ex-wife had no idea how bad t he smell was, he agreed on a Price that was about 1/10th of what the house had been worth, but only if she were to sign the papers that very day.

She agreed and within the hour his lawyers delivered the paperwork.

A week later the man and his girlfriend stood smiling as they watched the moving company pack everything to take to their new home . . . . . . .

Including the CURTAIN RODS….

I LOVE A HAPPY ENDING, DON’T YOU?????

8. HEALTH TIPS
Nearly half of all heart attacks may be ‘silent’

New York: Nearly half of all heart attacks may not have classic symptoms, such as chest pain, shortness of breath and cold sweats but are likely to be silent, reveals new research.

A silent heart attack occurs when blood flow to the heart muscle is severely reduced or cut off completely.

“The outcome of a silent heart attack is as bad as a heart attack that is recognised while it is happening,” said Elsayed Z. Soliman, director of the epidemiological cardiology research centre at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Centre, in the US.

The findings showed that silent heart attacks are made up 45 percent of all heart attacks.

Also, these are more commonly found in men but are more likely to cause death in women.

Further, the risk of dying from heart disease increases by three times in case of a silent heart attack.

The chance of dying from all other causes rises by 34 percent.

Silent heart attacks are usually detected when patients undergo an electrocardiogram (ECG) — a process to check heart’s electrical activity.

“Doctors need to help patients who have had a silent heart attack quit smoking, reduce their weight, control cholesterol and blood pressure and get more exercise,” the researchers noted in the paper published in the journal Circulation.

For the study, the team analysed the records of 9,498 middle-age adults.

For over an average of nine years after the start of the study, 317 participants had silent heart attacks while 386 had heart attacks with clinical symptoms.

8.3 This Is Why You Should Sleep on Your Left Side (Backed by Science)

HEALTH LIFESTYLE SCIENCEBY

We all know that duration of sleep is critical for mental and physical wellbeing, but it turns out that sleep position may be another important factor in the quest for optimum health.

Specifically, a small body of research suggests that, for many people, sleeping on the left side may be the ticket to better health and better sleep. The theory stems fromAyurveda, a holistic approach to health and medicine that originated in India.

So why all the fuss about sleeping on the left side? Turns out it may be good for our digestion, our backs, and even our hearts due to the positions of different organs. Here are six potential benefits that may be derived from catching some Zzzs while lying on your left side.

sleeping-on-the-left-side

1. It bolsters the lymphatic system.

According to Ayurvedic medicine, sleeping on your left sideallows your body to better filter lymph fluid and waste via the lymph nodes as the left side of our body is the dominant lymphatic side. Western research has also found that sleeping on the left side can help the body process waste materials from the brain. In contrast, sleeping on your right side can decrease the lymphatic system’s efficiency.

2. It may improve digestion.

When it comes to digestion, sleeping on the left side may be preferable to the right due to the simple matter of gravity. Specifically, lying on the left side allows food waste to easily move from the large intestine into the descending colon (meaning you’re more likely to have a bowel movement upon waking). Sleeping on the left side also allows the stomach and pancreas to hang naturally (our stomach lies on the left side of the body), which can keep the development of pancreatic enzymes and other digestive processes humming. (Need help visualizing this process? Consult the image above).

3. It’s good for your heart.

Doctors have long recommended that pregnant women sleep on their left side in order to improve circulation to the heart. Even if you’re not pregnant (or a woman), sleeping on the left side may help to take some pressure off the heart, as gravity can facilitate both lymph drainagetoward and aortic circulation away from the heart. That said, it should be noted that there’s some debate over whether sleeping on the left or right side is best for heart health.

4. It’s ideal for pregnant women.

Sleeping on the left side doesn’t only improve pregnant women’s circulation. It can also help to relieve pressure on the back, keep the uterus from squeezing the liver, and increase blood flow to the uterus, kidneys, and fetus. For this reason, doctors tend to recommend that pregnant women spend as much of their sleep time as possible on their left sides.

5. It may reduce heartburn.

A study published in The Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology found that lying on the left side can helpreduce acid reflux symptoms. Again this is because our stomach lies on the left side. Conversely, lying on the right side may aggravate these symptoms. The effects are fairly immediate; if you’re struggling with heartburn after a meal, try taking a 10-minute lie-down on your left side.

6. It may relieve back pain.

People who suffer from chronic back pain may benefit from switching to left-side sleeping. That’s because sleeping on your side can relieve pressure on the spine. Feeling more comfortable, in turn, will improve your chances of getting a good night’s sleep.

Note

While all of these factors point to compelling reasons to start sleeping on your left side, it’s important to note that some people—including those with heart disease, sleep apnea, glaucoma, and carpal tunnel syndrome—may not benefit from side sleeping. If you’re unsure about what sleep positions may be best for you, it’s always a good idea to consult a medical professional.

How to make the switch

If you are ready to make the switch, you’ll find that it may take some time to build the new habit of sleeping on your left side. Implementing a few simple strategies can help ensure a smooth transition. For instance, you may want to experiment with putting a body pillow behind your back so that it’s harder for you to roll off of your left side during sleep. It can also be helpful to try sleeping on the opposite side of the bed than you normally do; that way your sleep orientation won’t feel much different (even if you’re sleeping on your opposite side).

It will also be important to choose a mattress that’s ideal for side sleeping. Because sleeping on your side can put pressure on the hips and shoulders, it’s important to choose a softer mattress that will help relieve pressure in those areas. Also be sure to look for a mattress that allows the spine to rest in natural alignment. And of course, make sure that whatever mattress you choose feels comfortable to you. The combination of a comfy bed and a health-promoting sleeping position is sure to increase your chances of sleeping well and feeling great whenever you wake up.

12. HINDI CORNER -
