FROM PLANNING TO UNVEILING OF 50 FT MANGAL MURTI HANUMAN
(THE TALLEST HINDU STATUE IN NORTH AMERICA)
Canada day celebrations on July 1st, 2016,were extended at Vishnu Mandir to Saturday July 2nd when 50 ft golden Hanuman Murti was unveiled by Morari Bapu, a Hindu Saint and preacher from India. Over 2500 devotees came from all over Ontario to become part of the historical event for all North American Hindus. Lord Hanuman statue is the tallest in North America. “Lord Hanuman is the symbol of strong Will Power in a man.”. The Vishnu Mandir stands proudly in Richmond Hill at the North entrance of Metro Toronto. This temple radiates spiritual power and aesthetic gracefulness for devotees. Hundreds of world famous Hindu saints, scholars and great artists have visited this institution. Temple motto is that “we nurture families from cradle to golden years”. Vishnu Mandir was established in 1979 by Dr. Budhendra Doobay, cardiologist and heart surgeon and recipient of Order of Ontario, along with a very dedicated team of volunteers.
Dr Doobay explained that how the idea of installing 50 ft Hanuman ji statue came about. Hanuman ji statue was favoured as he represents great qualities. Hanuman ji is the most worshipped deity in India and is the great representative of dharma. He teaches us three things – 1) we must serve, which he demonstrated in his service to Lord Rama very well, 2) Constantly sing the glories of God, and 3) be humble always. When lord Rama praised Hanuman after Hanuman ji brought back news of Mother Sita, telling Hanuman ji that He was indebted to him for his service. Hanuman ji felt so embarrassed that he fell on Lord Rama’s feet and cried.
As temple was debating the cost of this project to install the 50’ high Hanuman ji, a family came forward in 2013 saying they will pick up the cost of entire project. And true to their word they picked up the entire cost of this mammoth project together with the management and overseeing of the installation. This project has cost about C$250,000.
A construction Company Maturam Art Centre, in India was chosen after much research to execute the project. Maturam Art Centre have designed & developed several iconic sculptures worldwide. Mr Naresh Kumar Verma, head of the company, finalized the concept and position of Lord Hanuman and visited Vishnu Mandir site in 2014. Naresh ji was taken to Morari Bapu in India to choose this pose of Hanuman ji. The standing position and golden colour was approved by Morari Bapu. In view of the extreme weather conditions in Toronto, the construction material used is special fibre glass with a patented technology of layering fibre glass with special metal which can withstand the fluctuating temperatures from -70 degree to +70 degrees Centigrade. The life expectancy of such a structure is over 200 years. It took about six months to build it and was shipped to Canada around March 2015. Naresh Kumar arrived at Vishnu Mandir June 2016 and with the help of local experts, assembled the structure in three weeks. On July 2nd this divine statue was unveiled by Morari Bapu. The donating family dedicated Hanuman ji statue to all North Americans. We hope this will become a pilgrimage place for all visitors coming to Toronto from all part of the world.
Two days ceremony preceding the installation was attended by hundreds of devotees. Kalash Puja and other sthapana rituals were performed by temple Vedic priests. 108 chanting of Hanuman Chalisa were also done.
The day of the inauguration started with Havan where ‘Aum’ manifested itself. Abhishek to Hanuman ji was done by Bapu standing in the basket of a cherry picker (Genie). He addressed the gathering of over 2500 devotees who came from all over Ontario. He explained that by bringing our deities outdoor symbolizes the celebration/exuberance of life and our culture beyond barriers. Devotees heard a very inspiring speech. Everyone was served preeti bhoj after the program. A revolving and lighted ‘AUM” was also installed on the roof of the temple.
One of the plaques on the pedestal states that “Lord Hanuman overcame the natural inclination of the mind to wander in a meaningless way. He is in complete control of all his senses. There’s no quick, easy way to achieve a calm mind. And Hanuman ji mastered his mind through meditation practices and great concentration on the Divine”.
We pray that Lord Hanuman will protect all of us, city of Toronto, Country of Canada and also the whole world. Future project is to install 15 ft Lord Rama’s statue in front of Mangal Murti Hanuman temple. If anyone would like to contribute to Lord Rama’s Murti project, please contact Temple executives. All donations are tax deductible in Canada
