Why do we fast during Navratri. Why we eat only satvik food during these nine days, One of my Friends son asked me these questions. My answers were not satisfying & logical according to him. Please help me with Convincing answers to these questions?

Astrology plays a very important role in Hinduism. It is believed that according to certain the alignment of the planets – stars, man’s mind is conducive to divine contemplation. Example the moon has tremendous influence on our minds – check with mental institutions.
Nawratri falls twice a year at the vernal and again at the autumnal equinox. Hindus believe these periods are auspicious and it then easy to concentrate, meditate, pray. Why fasting?
When we fast, our minds are more easily controlled, all the senses seem to be subdued and we can easily contemplate on shall we say God. As per the Gita, Lord Krishna said that food plays a great role on our mental make up. Vegetarianism and vegan diets are now used so much for medical health – Clinton, an example.
